REPUBLIC OF IRELAND.....0-0......ASPIRE ACADEMY (QATAR)  - article extracted from www.fai.ie

Gary O'Neill

The Republic of Ireland Under-15s got their season off to an encouraging start on Monday as they gave a good account of themselves against the Aspire Academy at the Khalifa Stadium in Qatar.

The one ingredient missing from Ireland's display against a side they were giving away a year to in age was a goal.
John Morling's side did fashion a number of clear-cut chances in both halves to break the deadlock but lacked the finishing touch in the vital area as well as coming up against a talented goalkeeper for the home side.

This was the opening game of the campaign for Ireland and they looked a solid outfit in the first game of this week's double-header at the world-renowned sports campus.

Sam O'Connor of Malahide United was presented with an opening to fire Ireland ahead after only five minutes only to miss before Sam Byrne shot straight at the ‘keeper when put through on goal.

Byrne was lively on the Irish wing in the first half and again went close after weaving past two defenders to get a sight on goal only for his effort to be saved.

Aspire's only real chance of the opening half arrived following an Irish corner when they launched a counter-attack but goalkeeper Sean Fagan was relieved to see the shot strike the post and bounce away to safety.

Both sides had opportunities in the second half and Ireland produced the best of them when Byrne's crossed found Conor McDonald and his left-foot volley beat the goalkeeper but smashed off the post.

Ireland manager John Morling was impressed with the workout. He said: "It was an entertaining game and we kept the ball really well in possession, which is something we emphasise to the players at this stage of their development.

"We defended well and it says a lot about the number of chances we created that the Aspire goalkeeper was man of the match. Our lads were disappointed not to win the game but they can take heart from their display, especially against an older team in their first match together at this level."

REP OF IRELAND: Shane Fagan (Cherry Orchard); Sean Long (Cherry Orchard), Kyle McFadden (Swilly Rovers), Daniel O'Reilly (Cherry Orchard), Sean Coyne (Cherry Orchard); Conor McDonald (St. Kevin's Boys), Glody Nsay (Cherry Orchard), Jonathon Leddy (Cavan Shamrocks), Sam Byrne (St. Joseph's Boys); Sam O'Connor (Malahide United), Gary O'Neill (Kingdom Boys).
Substitutions: Dylan Hayes (St. Joseph's Boys) for McDonald, Adam Wixted (Stella Maris) for O'Connor (both 60 mins)

PREMIER: Tralee Dynamos 1 Inter Kenmare 1 Dynamos despite going a goal down early in the first half went on to dominate this game yet were denied an equaliser for a long spell due to a combination of outstanding goalkeeping & defending by Kenmare's rearguard. Dynamos equaliser came mid way through the second half when Eddie Duggan spotted the run of Peter McCarthy, Eddie's pass was played into the path of Peter who volleyed to the net from 15 yards. Robert Birdsall came to Dynamos rescue on the 80th minute with a fantastic save in a 1 v 1 situation 10 yards from goals. Team: Robert Birdsall, Jeffrey Roche, Peter McCathy, Chris O'Sullivan, Diarmuid Lee, Sean O'Reilly, Wayne Duggan, Glen McCarthy, Mossie Hogan, Eddie Duggan, Maxwell Mugabe. UNDER 15 PREMIER: Killarney Celtic 1 Kingdom Boys 2 Weather again was awful, but its December and its Kerry,so on we go and this week we were away to our arch rivals Killarney Celtic and what a cracker it turned out to be.Firstly credit must go to Celtic for having a playable pitch also to referee Seamus O' Mahony for the manner in which he left the game ebb and flow given the conditions and lastly to both teams for a wonderful display of football.

Kingdom Boys were first to draw blood after only 10 mins when Niall o Riordan was on hand  to finish clinically after good work by Nigel O' Connor.1 nil and we were anything but cruising.Celtic were winning the aerial battle in midfield and their wingers were giving us all kinds of problems.

Paul White in goals was the busier of the two keepers and we managed to keep a clean sheet until the 37th min when a short corner was drilled in and we failed to deal with it, so it was 1-1 at the break and all to play for. The second half we had the breeze to our back and had to make a few positional changes,

Nonie had to come off injured and it was great to see Seanie Moloney back after a long lay off,he went straight into his familiar forward position and almost  instantly started causing problems for Celtics defence.Darragh and Gary were starting to dominate at midfield and it wasn't long before we again took the lead, this time it was Seanie who combined with Wayne to set up Niall for his second, this seemed to be the injection the team needed and there was no way back for Killarney even though they did have a penalty with 4 Min's to go, But a penalty is only a penalty you still have to stick it and Celtic found that out when Paul White made a fantastic save and thus made sure Kingdom Boys collected all three points in this vital top of the table clash.I have to commend our team for the manner in which we turned a poor first half into a scintillating second half,we did what we do best get it down and play football.

Our back four of Gearoid,Michael, Jarrad and Argent were commanding throughout and their never say die hard attitude shone like a beacon.our midfield were masterful and our strikers were clinical ,,,On the day we did not use our full bench but credit to Mickey and Killian for being there for their squad,Ye're day will come lads......Keep up the good work Kingdom Boys forever........Happy Days!!!!!!

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Well done to Kingdom Boys Under 15 Niall O'Riordan who's brace of goals against Killarney Celtic gave his team all 3 points in their top of the table clash. Niall's excellent performance and goals guaranteed him a place on the Kerry Schoolboys League "Team of the Week" Well done Niall.

People such as Ken Sweeney, Paul Lowth, Peter Hawkins, Pat O' Connell, Joe Reilly ,Pa Cunningham, Pa Reidy,Tony Everet,Jamie Wren, Jimmy Wren,Adrian O'Shea,Kieran, Miah Lynch, Tony Duggan. As we continue to look back over the last 10 years of our short but successfull tenure in Schoolboys soccer, we look to remember some of the players and individuals who have made this such a fasinating story. K Boys were first in setting up Academies and with Alan Mc Govern, John Lenihan work started every Saturday morning and along with Tony O' Neill these guys set about creating a different culture which would bear fruits in years to come. Along came Colm Dunlea, Miah, Ken Robinson, Redmond and all were to play a significant role in player development in the years ahead. When K Boys obtained individuals such as Rena Powell and Lorainne Mc Intyre our administration work was in safe hands. Such people are hard to get nowadays. Players come and go and head in different directions but one such great story is Graham Dunlea whose time with us was a joy, such a great character and when Graham turned a Pro Golfer it was brilliant for all concerned.  Players such as David Rodgers, Jason Quirke, Sean Slattery, Mark Renardson, Jamie Kelly, Damien Quirke, Theo Diggins, Darren Dennehy, Colm Kirby, Stephen Mc Carthy and Luke Burgess our talent was starting to revolve.

UNDER 15 NATIONAL CUP: This week it was the turn of our under 15s in the Natoinal Cup. Home to Granagh from the Limerick League,All week we worried about weather conditions, So we decided to play on the I.T all weather and what a master stroke this proved to be, I must say a big thank you to Paul Cunningham for allowing this to happen.

I dream of the day when Our Club will have such a fine facility, anyway on with the game;We lined out again without four of our regulars Seanie Moloney,Michael Wrenn,Donnacha McGarry and Martin Fitzgerald, but we could not let this affect us too much.twenty one seconds in Wayne Duggan calmed whatever nerves were there when he slotted home our first, this was followed 7mins later with his second of four for his team credit must go to his fellow players for a fine display all round ,passing and movement was at a very high standard Nigel O'Connor netted two, Darragh Carmody wasn't going to be out done and he grabbed two of his own,Gary O'Neill got in on the act with one.

Paul White,Gearoid Clifford,Argent Kastrati,Jarrad O'Sullivan and Mike O'Brien were setting up and cleaning up any thing in the back line, conceeding only two in the 80mins Our midfield of Gary O'Neill,Darragh Carmody Niall O'Riordan and Johnny Hannifin were in fine form cutting into the opposing rearguard at will and setting up our front two of Wayne Duggan and Nigel O'Connor to take their team into the next round of this great competition.

Also a word of praise to our bench of Dylan Flynn and Cillian McGovern when called in did their team proud. Also we would like to thank Aidan Carmody and Na Gael Club for their hospitality shown to us in providing food and drinks after the match.

Club History: As we continue to look back over the last 10 years of our short but successful tenure in Schoolboys soccer, we look to remember some of the players and individuals who have made this such a fascinating story. Kingdom Boys laid the foundations in terms of development and in players like David Hennessy, Chris Kerins, Stevie O' Mahony, Adam Renardson, Danny Carroll, Gordon Kerins, Paul Walsh, Stephen O' Sullivan, David Moore, Billy Dennehy, David Flaherty, Sean Gazza Kelly, Mikey Bowler, Giles O' Grady, Peter Mc Carthy, James Sugrue, Anthony Murphy, Paul English, Dan O'Connor, Shane Guthrie, Colin O' Connor, Kieran Scannell, Kevin Slattery, Martin Bowler, Paul Heaslip, Adam Moore, the quality above says it all. I'm sure there are some players in the early stages that haven't been mentioned but over the coming weeks they certainly will be. When you consider that some of the above named players have played at the highest level in domestic football and some have tasted football in England the ingredients of this Club is based on Development of young footballers.

07/11/09
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Well done to Wayne Duggan who playes with Kingdom Boys under 15 for his selection on Kerry Schoolboys League Team of the Week. Wayne scored 4 goals against Granagh United (Limerick) in the National Cup. This goal gave the team the platform to put in a polished  performance winning 9-2.

HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY: Tralee Dynamos/Kingdom Boys board of director Colm Clifford celebrated his 50th birthday at a surprise party held last night in the Abbeygate Hotel. A huge crowd attended the party displaying the high esteem that Colm is held within the community. Tralee Dynamos made a presentation to Colm to mark this special occassion. Colm's new role has linked him with Adrian McHugh as manager of the Kingdom Boys Under 15 team this was reflected by the large number of parents who attended. A final word to Kay & Gearoid who's planning of this fantastic occassion gave Colm a 50th birthday celebration to remember. more

Club History: 1O years ago a group of people decided to form a dedicated schoolboy club which would cater for not only the youth of Tralee but Kerry as a whole. Little did those people know that 10 years down the line so much would be achieved. Years ago Kerry teams playing their illustrious opponents in Dublin and others would be beaten before any kick off however all that has changed and through those people in K Boys and their vision and pro-active approach the process began. Kingdom Boys have done so much for the development of the youth and it's fantastic to see that still to-day so many of those players are still playing at some grade. We still have players playing in England and in the highest level of soccer domestically to boot. With so many players having represented their county/country at several different age groups we have gone from strength to strength and will continue to do so. This week we begin to salute individuals and over the next few weeks we hope to recognise all those people. Chris Kerins, Ger O' Mahony, Steve Renardson, Kerry Renardson, Brian Mc Carthy, Tony O' Neill, Pat O' Sullivan, Tom Spillane, Willie Dennehy, Francie Slattery, Colm Dunlea, Redmond Powell many more will be mentioned over the coming weeks along with all the players.

31/10/2009
TEAM OF THE WEEK:  Kingdom Boys under 12 Calvin Foley was on fire in the Kingdom Boys v Summerville (Limerick) National Cup Game scoring a hat trick for his team. Well done Calvin on making The Kerry Schoolboys League "Team of the Week".

BEREAVEMENT: Tralee Dynamos extend their sympathy to The O'Sullivan Family on the passing of their son Alan. Alan was a member of Tralee Dynamos youths squad 2005/2006. May Alan rest in peace.

YOUTHS LEAGUE: Killarney Athletic 5 Tralee Dynamos 3 Dynamos went down dissapointly in a game they should have got something from. That said one would have to marvel at the individual effort of Aiden O'Connell (Left back) who got possesion midway inside he own half and with his first touch he got his head up looking to pass, with no pass becoming available he continued his run into Athletic's half, good movement by his team mates opened up a gap that Aiden accelerated through, 20 yards from goals with defenders closing down fast and the goal keeper advancing Aiden showed calmness personified with his side of the foot shot under the appoaching goalkeepers body and into the back of the net much to the joy of the travelling Dynamos support. Aiden goal was a goal worthy of winning any game alas on the stroke of half time we conceeded a goal to leave the teams level at the break 1-1.

Athletic were next to score midway through the second half again Dynamos will be dissapointed with some of the defending that allowed Ed O'Sullivan to ghost in at the back post for an easy finish with no defender in tow.  2-1 became 3-1 in the space of a couple of minutes. Dynamos responded through subs Stephen Burke & the very impressive Aaron "Gazza" Houlihan who linked up to setup Ashton Mugabe for the second goal and game back on as Athletic led 3-2 with 10 minutes to go. Athletic went 4 - 2 up from a corner where the player jumped unchallenged and directed the ball into the net despite best efforts of Robert Birdsall in the Dynamos goal. Athletics fifth was a piece of individual brillance from Athletic's centre forward who got the ball 25 yards out, turned spotted keeper Birdsall off his line and with the coolest of finishes lobbed our keeper. Credit due to the players who never gave up, Dynamos were rewarded with another goal when Declan Doody ran at the heart of the Athletic defence and after skipping by 2 defenders he was taking down inside the box, penalty to Dynamos. Declan took the penalty shooting to the bottom right corner of the net to finish the scoring 5-3

A CHAMPIONSHIP: Bray Wanderers 1 Tralee Dynamos 0 Dynamos finished their season conceeding a goal late in injury time. Great credit is due to Jason Fitzgerald, Sean O'Sullivan and the squad for providing the club with a great year on the soccer pitch. League of Ireland soccer in Kerry for the first time, 4th round in the F.A.I. cup and wins under their belt against Bohemians, Shamrock Rovers, Cork City. The players deserve great credit for their commitment since they kicked off over 15 months ago.

UNDER 13 NATIONAL CUP: Killorglin 1-3 Kingdom Boys. The all Kerry clash finished in favour of the Tralee side whose goals came from Joseph O’Callaghan, Shane Lowth and Kieran O’Mahoney.

UNDER 11: Kingdom Boys 2 Inter Kenmare 2 Kingdom Boys drew their second game from their opening three fixtures drawing 2-2 with Inter Kenmare. Inter were 2-0 up through Ciaran Crowley and Denis Cronin but the Tralee side drew level with goals from Fergal Ryan and Cian Twohig.

UNDER 11 DIVISION 1: Camp Juniors 9 Kingdom Boys B 3  Having lost their opening game Camp will be happy after picking up all three points with a 9-3 win over a weakened Kingdom Boys team. Finn Mellon and Sean O’Hara led the scoring for Camp while Keelan Pierce got 2 and Joel Vesey got the K Boys scores.

UNDER 15: Today's game saw us at home to Inter Kenmare in the league and what a game it turned out to be,We started without Gary O’Neill,Seanie Moloney,Martin Fitzgerald and Jarrad O’Sullivan, but we brought in ample cover from our talented under 14squad,One of these was Michael O’Brien who went straight in at right back and didn't let his side down all day. Conditions did there best to spoil the contest but credit must go to both sides for serving up some great football, It was K Boys who opened the scoring after 8 mins,a sweeping move down the left saw Nonie Hannifin swing in a great ball for Nigel O’Connor to stick home from close range. We were playing with a strong breeze and had Inter on the back foot for most of the first half but bewteen stout defending and the help of the cross bar on at least five occasions we couldn't break them down,Inter were rarely in our final third but hit us with a sucker punch 30 mins in when our backline failed to clear a seemingly harmless cross and it was honours even at the break.

A stern talk in the dressing room and it was up and at them again but this time our work rate was higher, We controlled the ball better against what was now a hurricane and our two wingers of Niall O'Riordan and Nonie Hannifin were making great runs opening up Inter's defence at will, this was to set up our 2nd goal and it was Darragh Carmody who slotted home. Two became three 20mins in when Donnacha McGarry controlled the ball well and set up Michael Wrenn who in turn threaded a pass to Wayne Duggan and he finished with aplomb.

No way back for a gallant Kenmare side as our back line shut up shop and so it finished 3 1 to the home side.On the day it turned out to be a real test of character for our team, who showed that no matter what conditions are like they can be over come, good attitude is the key and we're not quiet there yet.Well done to every one including referee Tom Kerrisk who allowed the game to flow throughout and special thanks to our loyal followers(Avril,Jimmy,John and Stevee) who braved the conditions and never once moaned. PS best of luck to all our lads who are traveling to Dublin this coming week with the emerging talent program keep up the good work.

Under 15 manager Colm Clifford said it's a great honour to be associated with such a great young player who's attitude throughout has been exemplary.Gary's international call up was well deserved, all those people involved with Gary's career to date knew that this day would come. We wish Gary the best of luck in the future.

Gary was also a member of the Ireland team that took part in the Hibernia Cup recently in Dublin.

TRALEE DYNAMOS VS BOHEMIANS: Tony O'Neill, P.R.O. Kingdom Boys has sent the following for all player/coaches/parents.

Sunday 18th of October at 2pm Tralee Dynamos will face Bohemians of Dublin in their final home game of this season A Championship.  As you are aware Kingdom Boys are now the nursery club for Dynamos. As part of the celebrations and to show our support for the link up we are urging all players to attend this match along with parent’s/guardian.

Admittance is free for players and only  €5 per Adult.

Our under 9/10 Academy players under the guidance of Academy directors/coaches will display their skills at half time of this massive match. Our Under 12 players will also act as ball boys. A draw for a football (signed by the current squad) will be held at half time. We also hope to have a penalty shoot out competition at half time.

All budding soccer players now have a fantastic opportunity to continue their progression at home as we now have a clear pathway with Dynamos in the League of Ireland. Currently there is the A Championship but hopefully this may even develop further in the not so distant future.

So please come along and support the Boys and create a special atmosphere..

UNDER 15 NATIONAL CUP: Another week gone by and were back on the playing field again,Having focused all week on this game We knew we had to hit the field running and this we did.Our back line were in a mean mood and weren't giving anything away this was to filter through out the team; the hunger we showed to take control and dictate the play in taking the game to our opponents was exciting, but we had to wait all of 25mins before we opened the scoring,a move started at the back when Donnacha McGarry set up Gary O' Neill who in turn played in (Mr Cool) Darragh Carmody to finish clinically to the net.

However this was just the tonic we needed and 5 minutes later it was Seanie Moloney who flicked a neat header past the keeper after great work from Jonnie Hanafin on the left flank. We continued to press forward and our third goal came from a well taken free kick by Gearoid Clifford who placed the ball on Gary O' Neills head only to set up Nigel O' Connor for a splendid goal.

3 nil at the half and shortly after it got worse for Regional again it was Darragh Carmody at the end of some great work by Michael Wrenn and Argent Kastrati on the right wing who finished well to the net.Our two front men of Seanie Moloney and Nigel O' Connor were working tirelesly all day and it was fitting that Sean set up Nigel for our 5th In fairness to the opposition they tried hard all day but were outclassed and outgunned by a very fine Kingdom Boys outfit,

Our keeper Paul White had the luxury of heading away early to the Ireland Vs Italy game and so we brought in Wayne Duggan who went up front,  with Argent taking over in goals The game had long pettered out as a contest when two players from Regional were sent packing for conduct unbecoming, however it was heart warming to see our team never dropped their standards. We know the road ahead will throw up lots of twists and turns this season but with the right attitude who knows what might happen.Well done to all the fans who turned up to support our team (Remember little acorns make great Oaks). Many thanks to Under 15 manager Colm Clifford for this article

Mossie starred with Dynamos at centre back. Mossie played for Tralee Dynamos from 1977 to 1998.

UNDER 12 LEAGUE: Kingdom Boys b 5 Killorglin 1 played 6th oct 2009 - We started with a good breeze behind us and had them on the backfoot from the very start with Paul Nolan and Cian O'Brien gettin on top of the midfield early allowing Wesley Meehan and Dara Lowth to get forward to support our strikers Eoin Hennessy and Jamie Leen. We went 1 up after ten minutes following good work from Tom Phelan and Paul Nolan ending with Paul putting a great through ball to Eoin who finished well.

Ten minutes later Dara released Wesley who unleashed a piledriver to put us 2up. Our defence were solid throughout marshalled by Jack O'Shea alongside Thomas Phelan, Conor Brick and Kevin Murphy with Jack Carmody in goals looking the real deal. 5 mins into the 2nd half we went 3 up through Wesley again before Killorglin got 1 back.

We responded straight away following an excellent run by Dara to find Jamie whose work rate deserved a goal, we made several subs and Stephen,Gavin,Paul,Kyle,Kieran and Charlie all played their part and a good run by Kyle found Tom Phelan who found the bottom corner with a peach. All in all a very satisfying performance by our boys and this augurs well for the rest of the campaign. A lot of solid performances throughout the team but for sheer tenacity and drive my man of the match was Dara Lowth.

Many thanks to Adrain O'Shea for the article.

Park are strong at this age and as we had to field 7 Under 13's this was always going to be a strong ask of this young side. Pa can be really pleased with his troops and can now concentrate on their domestic league/cup campaign. Fantastic displays from Killian, Brian, Mike, Claudio and Rob at the back Sean, Matt, Danny, Dylan in Midfield and Shane up front showed that these guys were never going to give up. Here's hoping that the Kennedy Cup Management was watching as Killian, Brian, Claudio, Rob and Sean were by far the best footballers on show.

K.D.L. PREMIER: Tralee Dynamos 0  Lisselton Rovers 5 - Dynamos put in a tough workman like performance against League champions Lisselton who are still smarting from their exit from the F.A.I. From the 18th minute in the first half till the 70th minute they kept Lisselton at bay with resolute defending. K.D.L. PREMIER: Inter Kenmare 3 Tralee Dynamos 0. Dynamos second game within 72 hours and we remain pointless. Inter Kenmare scored on the stroke of half time and then got a very disputed penalty that changed the game completely. Again Dynamos lined out with a very young side with a lot of work needed to be done to bring these players up to premier level. A Jeffrey Roche free kick rebounded back off the cross bar was the closest Dynamos came to scoring. Team: Robert Birdsall, Trevor Murphy, Jonathon McCoy, Chris O'Sullivan, Jeffrey Roche, Mossie Hogan, Glen McCarthy, Anthony Shanahan, Diarmuid Lee, Maxwell Mugabe, Jerry Fitzgerald. GREYHOUND BAR CUP FINAL: Tralee Dynamos 1 Lisselton Rovers 2. Tralee Dynamos completed their Kerry District League season with an unfortunate defeat. Dynamos opened the scoring through Chris Kerins in the first half after he linked up well with Adrian McHugh. 1 - 0 at the break and playing satifactorily. Lisselton equaliser had some fortune as it seemed clear that Wayne Guthrie in the goal was clearly fouled by Anthony Glaseen as the ball ended up in the net with the keeper unable to recover from the contact. Lisselton applied the pressure and was rewarded with a penalty after Guthrie challenged Brian Baker and made contact with the man and not the ball. David Hennessey took the penalty and shot to the bottom left to score Lisselton's second goal and the match winning goal. As Lisselton celebrated the referee red carded Jonathon Burrows and Dynamos had to play the last 15 minutes with 10. Manager Colm Clifford rang the changes and in came Glen McCarthy and Ivan Maher who with the game in the dying moments had a chance of goal alas his header was straight at keeper Hennessey. Lisselton are the deserving winners of the double.

7th/8th PLACE PLAYOFF: Kerry 4 Roscommon 2

Kerry finish’s 2009 Kennedy Cup on a high and secure 7th place:

Kerry wrapped up their 2009 Kennedy Cup campaign with a superb performance defeating Roscommon, who themselves were one of the surprises of the week, on a  4-2 score-line.

On a day that started with a 2-0 defeat to Waterford the evenings win was a reflection of the resilience of this squad. In the morning game Kerry were caught cold with two early goals, both coming inside the first ten minutes. The team can be forgiven for this display as there is no doubt they were suffering from a physical and metal hangover from yesterday’s tough defeat to Galway . Indeed the Galway goal, given by the linesman who reckoned that Roy Kelliher had stepped over the line, was a talking point around the tournament today.

However credit must go to the management team and the squad themselves for raising their game to such a level for the game against Roscommon, especially as they had only 14 fit out-field players to call from.

Kerry went one up mid way through the first half when Gary O’Neill, who was superb on the night, and indeed throughout the tournament, ran at the Roscommon defence and scored with a great shot.

Conor Keane put Kerry two up following a good cross but Roscommon, who were unbeaten in their group pulled one back. Kerry were not to be denied however and their third again involved O’Neill. He put in a superb free kick which the keeper parried and Colm Hurley was on hand to nod home.

Again Roscommon, against the run of play, to make the score 3-2 but Kerry always looked capable of scoring and when it came what a goal it was.

James McCarrick was fouled around 25 yards out from goal. Gary O’Neill stepped up to the free kick and buried it in the top corner before the keeper was even able to move. Certainly this was a memorable finish to a week that had its highs and lows. Kerry were hampered with injuries but still performed very well, topping the group  and in doing so securing top seeding for next seasons competition. A seventh place finish, from 32 participants was very creditable and we can now look forward to many of this squad being invited into the Regional Academy next season and hopefully many of them getting capped for the country and for one or two there could be much more in store.

KENNEDY CUP: Kerry 0 Galway 1 Kerry’s hope’s of lifting the Kennedy Cup 2009 over but the tournament far from finished:Having topped their group, following two wins and a draw Kerry were pitted against unbeaten side Galway in the second of today’s quarter finals. Another big Kerry crowd turned up for the game which was played in high winds.

Kerry went into the game with a depleted squad. The unfortunate duo of Tadgh Fahy and Kevin Bowler are out for the week while twins Damien and Derek Breen were both ruled out for the quarter final.

Galway played with that wind in the first half and started brightly with Roy Kelliher making two good early saves. Kerry’s first real attack of note came in the sixth minute when a Jarlath O’Sullivan cross was knocked down by Gary O’Neill to Darragh Roche but his shot was too high. In the 13th minute Gary O’Neill put a corner into the danger area but it was held by the Galway keeper Alex Byrne whose long clearance brought them a corner of their own.

Conor Shaughnessy sung the corner in on the wind which was taken by Kerry keeper Kelliher who held it well but he adjudged to has carried the ball over the line. This was a tough call but to fair to the linesman he was in a great position to make the call decision.

The second half again started like the first. Jack Savage, Gary O’Neill and O’Sullivan all went close. Kerry were trying hard to get that vital drew but in the end it just would not come. They also lost Darragh Roche with a hamstring strain as their injury jinx continues.

So Kerry’s dream of lifting the Kennedy Cup for another year but the tournament is far from finished.

Tomorrow they play Waterford in the Kennedy Plate semi finals kicking off at 12 noon with the winner meeting the winners of the North Dublin v Roscommon clash to determine places 5-8.

Management Derek George, Brendan Hogan and Eoin Fitzgerald have been loud in their praise of the squad both on and off the pitch and while they are very disappointed with the loss to Galway all attention now turns to the Plate and the chance to finish fifth (of 32 Leagues) taking part.

KENNEDY CUP: Kerry 2 Limerick District 0. A Conor Keane double guaranteed Kerry a place in the quarter final before one of the biggest crowds ever seen at a Kennedy Cup match in the University of Limerick. This performace was a very controlled and mature performance from Kerry against the hosts it belies the fact the most of these boys are only 13/14 years of age. Once Conor Keane opened Kerry's account with a side footed finish to the far corner of the net after beating his opponent he insured his finish was of a high quality. Gary O'Neill and Greg Horan dominated the middle of the park and with Damien Breen and Conor Keane constant threats up front it was only a matter of time before a second arrived much to delight of the Kerry supporters.

KENNEDY CUP: Kerry 2 Wicklow 2. Kerry got of the best possible start scoring after 6 minutes through Damien Breen ( Mastergeeha) finished well to the net. One would have thought with the excellent start that this was the platform Kerry would build on but in truth Wicklow started to dominated proceedings and with goals in each half that put them a goal up with 20 minutes to go. This Kerry team is one with great spirit and battling qualities and when the need was at its highest the team responded. A foul in the Wicklow box led to a Kerry penalty and up stood Gary O'Neill probaly the coolest player on the pitch to side foot the penalty out of the keepers reach to give Kerry the equaliser but most of all a very valuable point that proved vital later on to ensure a quarter final and top seeding for the next Kennedy Cup Squad.

KENNEDY CUP: Kerry 1 W.W.E.C. 0. Kerry opened up their Kennedy Cup campaign with a commanding win. Gary O'Neill of Kingdom Boys scored the all important goal. Midway through the second half Gary hovered around the 18 yard box and when the opportunity arose Gary volleyed to the net much to delight of the huge Kerry following. Jarlath O'Sullivan of Kingdom Boys played at right back and put in an outstanding performance. Manager Derek George express his satifaction with the performance of both boys. Limerick District and Wicklow played out a scoreless draw in the other game.Kerry play both Limerick District and Wicklow tomorrow kick off times 10.00a.m. and 5.00p.m.

SALTHILL DEVON TEAM: Tralee Dynamos welcome Salthill Devon this Saturday evening at 6.30 for our 3rd round cup game. I'm sure this fixture is a game both teams are looking forward to. With thanks to Emlyn Long for photo and club history.

History of Salthill Devon Football Club

Salthill Devon is regarded as the pre-eminent soccer club in the West of Ireland. Soccer has been competitively played in this area of Galway since the 1940’s, but it is only since 1977 that quantum strides have been made.

Salthill Athletic and Devon Celtic (a small club with under age teams only) combined to form the club as it is constituted today. Steady growth and development, although at a relatively pedestrian pace were the hall marks of the club from day one. However the current guiding ‘fathers’ of the club grew with the club, both in age and aspiration through the 80’s, and that driving ambition is personified in the facility that is Drom today.

Growth itself has never been the driving force for Salthill Devon. Doing the right thing has always been the approach, with the assumption that success will follow. That motto has served the club well and the new facility is testimony to that aim. On the field of play Devon have always aspired to be among the best, but with the consideration that only a relatively small numbers of players ever make the step up to the truly elite. Consequently much emphasis is placed on developing individuals to be the ‘best they can’.

Challenging for titles at national level however is now very much part of the fabric that makes up Salthill Devon and the club are concentrating seriously in competing effectively at this level. Salthill are forever mindful that this step up, while tantalisingly close at times, can also be very far away. In 2009 the club contested underage FAI finals at 3 different age groups, U13, 16 & 18. While all 3 teams were ultimately unsuccessful it surely is only a matter of time until Salthill Devon can secure a coveted National FAI juvenile title. The 2008/09 season was to prove the clubs most successful to date locally with all bar one of the underage Galway District League Premier Division titles going to Salthill Devon added to 2 Connacht Cup titles.

Salthill Devon has grown in just over 30 years from a small club with two adult teams and a handful of under-age players to be an influential example to soccer in Ireland of what can be achieved with a little ambition, a lot of hard work and a burning desire to achieve.

In 2006 our Under 21 side won the Eircom League Tony O’Neill Trophy in an historic night at Terryland Park by defeating Cork City 2-1. That success was to mark a significant watershed in that it was the clubs first male National Title.

In 2008 Salthill Devon entered the League of Ireland through the A Championship and this side is now the flagship team of a club which boasts 3 adult teams and in excess of 25 underage teams, including League of Ireland U20.

Cairdeas tré Spórt - Our Motto

The Club ethos is concerned with the development of young players and with contributing in a positive manner to our local community. The Club motto 'Cairdeas tré Spórt' encapsulates the essence of what Salthill Devon are about, namely, the development of lasting friendships through sporting participation. Coupled with this is the development of role models and sporting heroes within the community. These will provide the powerful positive influences and peer Committeeure for our youth. The discipline and demands of athletic achievement are the real alternatives to the influences of drugs and crime.

DENNY PREMIER A FINAL: Tralee Dynamos 0 Lisselton Rovers 1. In front of a large crowd at the K.D.L. grounds Lisselton Rovers became deserving back to back league champions. Dynamos will be dissapointed with their  performance given the high standards they have set this season. Both teams ended the game with 10 men Shane Doolan send off in the 32th minute for a tackle on James Sugrue deemed red by referee Kevin O'Reagan. Maurice O'Rahilly for two bookable offences the second for dissent.

The first half was a dissapointing affair where both teams struggled to gain any sort of momentum with space at a premium. Dynamos best chances came after 29th minute a James Sugrue corner was headed back across the goal by Maurice O'Rahilly to Eoin Cassidy who setup Chris Kerins who's shot went wide from 10 yards.  From here to the end of the first half, was to be Dynamos best passage Jamie McIntyre jinxed his way through the Lisselton defence only to mishit his shot with only keeper Hennessey to beat. Chris Kerins & Adrian Quirke has shots off target.

In the 56th minute Lisselton took the lead through the hard working Glasheen when a Lisselton free kick went into a crowded goalmouth and in the scramble Glasheen rifled to the net to give 10 man Lisselton the lead. One would have to credit the spirit and determination of the Lisselton team who never allowed Dynamos to play their trademark passing game. In the 65th minute a James Sugrue free found Chris Kerins who header just cleared the cross bar. In the 78th minute Dynamos captain Maurice O'Rahilly was shown a second yellow card for dissent off the ball. Dynamos were denied in the 86th minute by a fantastic save by keeper David Hennessey, Chris Kerins did well down the wing getting bye two defenders his cross in turn found subsitute McHugh who's shot was excellently saved by Hennessey's fingertips on to the crossbar and out of the danger area.

Captain Steven Conway was presented with the cup from Kerry District League Chairman Sean O'Keeffee. Steven in speech thanked the management team of Brian McCarthy & Dell O'Shea for all their hard work throughout the season. He thanked the K.D.L. for the pitch in pristine condition and the match offical's for their handling of a competitive game. He also wished Tralee Dynamos the best of luck in the League of Ireland and complimented the club for taking the big step of bringing senior League of Ireland football to Kerry for the first time.

PREMIER: Tralee Celtic 0 Tralee Dynamos 1. Dynamos elected to play against the strong wind blowing towards the town end in the first half. Tralee Celtic were unfortunate not to open the scoring 17 minutes in hitting the cross bar, other than crosses Dynamos keeper Timmy Cotter was rarely tested over the 90 minutes. On the 27th minute Dynamos were unlucky not to break the deadlock with an Jason McCarthy effort from outside the box from the left that curled towards the top corner hitting the crossbar and going out of play. A couple of minutes later in a good move by Dynamos involving Glen McCarthy, Jonathon Burrows & Chris Kerins they setup Eddie Duggan who dispatched his shot past the impressive Dermot Raggett into the bottom left corner of the net. The second half had Dynamos playing with the wind dominating the proceedings creating a handful of chances and being denied by Raggett in the Celtic goal. Overall a good game of football between two sides who concentrated in playing football for the 90 minutes.

GREYHOUND BAR CUP SEMI-FINAL: Tralee Dynamos 2 Listowel Celtic 0

Eddie Duggan opened the scoring

Eoin Fitzgerald celebrates his 21st with 2 wins & his League of Ireland debut.

Eddie Duggan & Billy Stack scored the goals that see Dynamos advance into the Greyhound Bar Final. He was especially pleased with the back four containing 3 changes from the night before.

Eoin Fitzgerald & Peter Mc Carthy who both made their League of Ireland debuts against Cobh both putting in starring roles in this win. In fact Listowel Celtics best chance of the night late in the game with Dynamos holding a one goal lead was cleared of the line by Peter.

Billy (Chippy) Stack send the red contingent home smiling with a goal of sheer class gaining possesion his disguised his actions twice faking to go one way then the other leaving two defenders to shoot under the body of the advancing goalkeeper. Dynamos led 1-0 at the half time break thanks to safe goal keeping by Donnacha Galvin. With 20 minutes remaining Adrian McHugh picked up an injury and was replaced by Mossie Hogan who was making his A team debut. And what a way to start you debut resulting in your first touch hitting the back of the net. Mossie will be thankful to Eddie Duggan who's hard work resulted with an inch perfect cross across the six yard box for Mossie to get the final touch into the net. E.A. SPORTS CUP: Kerry League 1 Cork City 3 (a.e.t.) Well done to the Kerry League team & manager John O'Reagan who put in an excellent performance against full time side Cork City. Kerry went 1-0 down in the first half but with some shrewd changes by the Kerry management turned the game around in Kerry's favour. James Sugrue curling  free kick 25 yards out on the left hand side of the pitch went straight to the net with City's keeper McNulty decieved by the flight of the ball. It was game on till the end of the second half with Kerry's counting themselves unlucky not to score the winner. Extra time prevailed and the superior fitness of full time professionals showed in the closing minutes with Danny Murphy free kick and Denis Behan's 20 yard effort in to the bottom right of Hennessy's goal sealed the win for Cork City. James Sugrue, Maurice O'Rahilly, Brian Fitzgerald, Chris Kerins & Stevie O'Mahony all contributed to an excellent Kerry performance. Ex Tralee Dynamos player Billy Dennehy put in a match winning performance for Cork City.

GREYHOUND BAR CUP Q-F: Killorglin F.C. 1 Tralee Dynamos 3 Dynamos advanced to the semi final of the cup with a well earned victory over a very workmanlike Killorglin side. Dynamos got off to the worst possible start with a defensive error that resulted with a back pass going all the way to the net to give Killorglin the opening score of the game.

Dynamos responded in positive fashion and in the 15th minute were awarded a free kick out on the left wing 30 yards from goal with the elements to his back James Sugrue hit a ferocious free kick that beat the keeper only to rebound of the under side of the cross bar down not crossing the line and with Adrian Quirke on hand to head to the net from a yard out.

Eddie Duggan put Dynamos ahead with a fantastic individual goal receiving the ball just outside his own box Eddie counter attacked with pace up the middle of the pitch with the last central defender to beat, Eddie knocked the ball 10 yards past the defender and out sprinted him to regain possesion and with only the keeper to beat Eddie cooly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper for a goal of individual class.

2-1 at the break we saw a mean Dynamos after the break who restricted Killorglin to the minimum of chances from distance and with time almost up Eoin Cassidy counter attacked released Eddie Duggan down the left wing who's first time cross to the in rushing James Sugrue to side foot to the net to finish the scoring at 3-1.

Team: Timmy Cotter, Jonathon Burrow, Maurice O'Rahilly, Brian Fitzgerald, Darren Crotty, Adrian Quirke, Stephen O'Mahony, James Sugrue, Eddie Duggan, Eoin Cassidy, Damien Diggins. Subs: Wayne Guthrie, Ivan Maher, Mossie Hogan.

UNDER 16 NATIONAL CUP: Killarney Celtic 2 Kingdom Boys 4 a.e.t. The Kingdom Boys under 16 team gave the club the perfect end to a memorable week which started with the u15’s reaching the last 16 of their National Cup and continued with Tralee Dynamos A Championship launch mid week.

In this game Kingdom Boys were pushed all the way and it wasn’t until extra time that they clinched their in the last 16 where they now face Corinthian’s from Cork.

Celtic started well with Chris Brady and Robert Watson causing the Tralee side a lot of problems. Indeed we almost witness one of the best goals scored at Celtic Park when Chris Davis, Robert Watson and Chris Brady all combined with a one touch move that ended with Brady just putting his volley on the wrong side of the post.

Celtic got their reward in the 21st minute when Chris Brady crossed and Chris Brady was able to poke the ball past a stranded Barry Galvin.

However the Tralee side were level before the break when Scott Monaghan squeezed the ball home from a tight angle.

Into the second half and Kingdom Boys were on top and in truth should have gone 3-1 up when Darren O’Sullivan went one on one with the keeper but David Gleeson did very well to deny him.

However one minute later he was powerless to stop Diarmuid Lee who picked up the ball outside the box and shot home across the Celtic keeper to put them 2-1 ahead.

But their lead only lasted two minutes. Terrance Moriarty picked up the ball and ran at the heart of the Kingdom Boys defence before being taken down. David O’Sullivan stepped up to level up the game.

Celtic had the better chances to win the game in the closing minutes Tadgh Moore’s glancing header went agonisingly wide.

Into extra time and here Kingdom Boys showed their class and took all the opportunities that they got with Adam Piggott setting up Darren O’Brien for their third At the end of the first period and Adam himself netting the fourth in the first minute of the second period. In this passage of play Celtic keeper David Gleeson took a totally accidental blow to the head and the game was held up for twenty minutes. Everyone wishes him a speedy recovery.

After the delay the game petered out with Kingdom Boys happy to hold what they had and march into the last 16 in Ireland alongside their under 15 team. This is a great achievement for all those associated with both teams.

Ronan Murphy’s height was causing trouble for the Kingdom Boys defence but at the other end they were very dangerous. Arron Houlihan started well and it was his header that was cleared for a corner that led to the first goal.
Scott Monaghan took the corner and Darragh O’Brien, who had made his way up from the back, rose powerfully to head home.

A Brian O’Shea header was the closest that Athletic came to equalising but Kingdom Boys had now forced 6 corners which showed their control on the early part of the game.

However from the 36th to the 40th minute it all happened with firstly Colm Tobin winning a free kick on the right of the box, he took it himself. Jack O’Connor got the slightest flick on the ball and it fell to Ronan Murphy who blasted home to the delight of the big Athletic contingent.

However their joy was short lived when in the next passage of play, Tobin fouled Arran Houlihan and then kicked the ball away – leading to a yellow card. This was his second as he had been booked earlier for a foul and so he was gone for an early shower. To make matters worse for Athletic when Houlihan put the free kick into their box Ian McCarthy was on hand to head home and send them in 2-1 in front.

It could have got much worse for the Killarney side in the early stages of the second half but a brilliant goal saving tackle by Cillian Fitzgerald kept them in the game.

Darren O’Brien, Dara Carmody and Houlihan combined for some lovely moves while at the other end Jack O’Connor and Jeff O’Donoghue were trying hard.

Athletic fought hard but couldn’t get the breakthrough they were looking for and tired in the last quarter when Kingdom Boys wrapped up the game. Before the decisive third goal Ian McCarthy had a header cleared off the line by the vigilant Derek Maye but it was a brief respite as in the 36th minute Darren O’Brien got the ball with his back to goal in the box and with quick feet spun around and shot low past Stephen Cahillane to wrap up the game.

This game was a great advertisement for Schoolboys soccer and the large crowd, including many neutrals were entertained right through the game and now Kingdom Boys can start preparing for the visit of Home Farm the illustrious Dublin side, who certainly wont be relishing the trip to the Kingdom.

SUNDAY 1ST OF MARCH
PREMIER DIVISION: PARK 0 TRALEE DYNAMOS 2 Goals from Eoin Cassidy & Damien Diggins gave Dynamos a comfortable win and local bragging rights into the bargain.

UNDER 14 INTER LEAGUE: KERRY 2 WEST CORK 0
Backboned by the nucleus of last year's Kennedy Cup runners up and with the addition of a number of new players that managers Pat O'Sullivan and Mike Kelly have recruited from the Kerry Under 14 Academy the Under 14's got their Inter League campaign off to a winning start when defeating West Cork 2-0.

Kerry got the best possible start with a goal inside the first five minutes. Liam O'Sullivan, who proved a handful for the West Cork defence all day, put in the first of his many crosses and Nigel O'Connor got on the end of it to head Kerry infront. For the rest of the first half Kerry continued to dominate and they enjoyed some very good passing movements involving the likes of Scott O'Mahoney, Jack O'Connor, Ronan Murphy and Gavin O'Shea.

At the back the Kerry defence dealt ably with anything that West Cork could throw at them with Nigel O'Connor, Mathew Moynihan and Jason Aherne very impressive.

Kerry started the second half at the same pace as the first and Donnacha McGarry went close with a header.
However they were given a wake-up call in the 12 minute when Stephen Cahillane did very well in the Kerry goal to push away a corner that Mark O'Shea had headed on target. Kerry took heed of the warning and within five minutes had doubled their lead when Gavin 'Shea used his guile to get in front of bigger defenders and head home another
O'Sullivan cross.

From here Kerry were never in danger of losing the game and Jack O'Connor, Ronan Murphy and Cathal Murphy, who came on as a sub were unlucky not to get Kerry's third.

The game finished 2-0 and this result sees Kerry top the group with matches against Limerick County at home and Waterford away to come.

The Kerry Squad: Stephen Cahillane, Nigel O'Connor, Jonathan Hannafin, Scott O'Mahoney, Matthew Moynihan, Jason Aherne, Liam O'Sullivan, Ronan Murphy, Jack O'Connor, Gavin O'Shea, Donnachada McGarry, Brian Clifford, Kenny Waltz, Cathal Sheehan, Craig Hickey, Paul White, Cathal Murphy, Michael Wrenn.

DYNAMOS PRESS RELEASE: Historic night for Tralee Dynamos as players put pen to paper:
At a very well attended information evening, held in the Education Centre at the Tralee I.T, the historic step was taken by Tralee Dynamos players as they signed the forms to become League of Ireland players. The first player to put pen to paper was Maurice O’Rahilly, a player who has come up from under age with the club and its Schoolboy affiliate Kingdom Boys.

Maurice said it was a proud night for him and for the club. He said “It is a historic night for the whole club – players, managers and supporters. However it is bigger than just Tralee Dynamos as this now gives every soccer player in Kerry the chance to play at the highest level in the country, League of Ireland football, without having to move to bigger towns & cities”

Noel White introduced a number of speakers to the gathering including Tralee Dynamos commercial manager Ken Sweeney who said that there has been a very positive reaction from businesses around Tralee.
Ken Sweeny
Commerical Officer

“The business people of Tralee have always been very supportive of the club and appreciate the huge financial cost that entering a team into the A Championship will put on the club. However initial contacts have been very positive and we hope to sign up a number of high profile sponsors in the next few weeks”.

A number of other fundraising initiatives will be announced by the club’s commercial department in the coming weeks and Ken said he was very hopeful that Tralee Dynamos will receive support, not just from the town but from the whole county.

Also speaking at the launch were Colm Dunlea (Member Board of Directors) and Brian Twohig (Kingdom Boys Super Sevens director) who are involved with the Schoolboys section of the club. Both echoed Maurice’s words emphasising the wonderful pathway that is now available for players – all the way from seven years of age to League of Ireland football.

Both also mentioned the wonderful success of a number of the club’s young players who have been named in Ireland Schoolboy’s squads recently, including Aaron Houlihan, who has been named on the latest under 16 squad that will travel to Belgium in February thereby highlighting the future talent that is coming through and who can now look forward to going all the way to League of Ireland football without having to leave Kerry.

Tralee Dynamos manager Mark Fitzgerald said that the management and squad were very proud to be the first in the county to bring League of Ireland football to Kerry adding “This is a very exciting time for all soccer lovers in the county and we hope to attract support from the whole of Kerry and of course will do everything in our power to give them plenty to cheer about.

The club is now eagerly awaiting the A Championship fixture list which will be released in February and to the official launch which will be held on Wednesday March 4th. The venue and times, along with the guest list will be announced in the coming weeks while the players, having signed the forms, will begin to get ready for the big kick-off in April and the arrival of top level football to Tralee and Kerry.

On a light-heated, but semi serious note, a comment heard on Rock Street was relayed to the meeting that Tralee Dynamos are now only three steps away from Europe!! That is the future, A Championship, Division 1 and Premier and then Europe – who knows where this will lead.

Tralee Dynamos Media Officer: Padraig Harnett
