F.A.I. FORD CUP 1ST ROUND
TRALEE DYNAMOS 2 CLONMEL TOWN 0
Dynamos Dominate to advance to second round of FAI Ford Cup:
Right from the off Tralee Dynamos showed
that they had carried their good form from last week into this first round FAI
Ford Cup clash with
Indeed an indication of their commitment
was the fact that the first serious tackle came in from Eoin Cassidy as Dynamos
harried
Their best efforts in the opening quarter came from a cross from David O’Leary which Chris Kerins just failed to reach and then a ball over the top from Eddie Duggan that Clonmel keeper Richard Ryan just got to before Kerins.
Tony Scully had the first shot on target for Clonmel in the 20th minute which Wayne Guthrie held well.
Once again James Sugrue was putting in excellent balls from crosses and corners and Brian Fitzgerald just failed to get his head on one as Dynamos continued to threaten.
The opening goal came in the 35th
minute and what a goal it was.
Dynamos doubled their lead on the 44th minute with a great move started and finished by Eoin Cassidy. He picked up the ball in the centre circle, passed to Diggins who fed Sugrue and when he put the ball into the box Cassidy had continued his run to crash the ball home.
As it turned out this was game over as Clonmel Town never recovered from the double blow.
The second half never caught fire with
Dynamos always in control and
There cause was further weakened when in the 55th minute Dwayne Burns was sent off following a straight red card.
Dynamos had the best of the few chances that were created with Kerins, Cassidy and Damien Diggins all going close.
At the other end Wayne Guthrie had a very quite afternoon and had only one save to make in the second half following an Eddie O’Brien cross.
The only concern for Dynamos was the fact the David O’Leary and Eoin Cassidy had to come off with knocks but hopefully both will be fully recovered for next Saturday nights A Championship clash with Cobh Ramblers.
As for the FAI Cup its onto a home second round clash, on May 24th against the winners of Glenmore/ Dundrum or St Mary’s.

Eleven years ago, Maurice O’Rahilly captained Tralee
Dynamos to victory in the FAI Youth Cup on a team that included current
Galway United star Derek O’Brien. This Sunday, with Tralee Dynamos now
established in the League of Ireland, he hopes to make his mark on the
FAI Ford Cup when the club hosts Clonmel Town in the First Round of the
competition.![]() The 29-year-old centre-half [pictured right] has played for Tralee Dynamos since the age of six and he is delighted at the progress the club is making. Currently enjoying their first season in the Newstalk A Championship, Tralee Dynamos have ambitions to follow the path of Mervue United and win promotion into the First Division. The club has played three matches so far in the Newstalk A Championship, suffering defeats to Sporting Fingal and Cork City before claiming victory over FC Carlow. O’Rahilly says that it took the players some time to get used to playing at this level but he know feels that they have the ability to push-on and look for a promotion place. Sunday’s match against Clonmel Town offers the club the opportunity to mark their debut season in the League of Ireland by making progress in the FAI Ford Cup. “It’s a huge game for us,” says O’Rahilly. “We’re a League of Ireland club now and so it’s a huge occasion to play an FAI Ford Cup game in Kerry. People expect more of us now that we’re an A Championship team. Clonmel have a very decent team but we’re really looking forward to it. “We played Sporting Fingal in our opening match of the season. They brought a very good team down and there were 1,000 people at the match. I think the occasion got to us a little bit. It took us 20 minutes to get used to the pace of the match, but once we got into it I thought we matched them. The next week we travelled to Cork and bombarded them but just couldn’t score. The Carlow match was a very important one because we knew that we had to win, and we fully deserved to do so. “When the draw was first made people were saying to us that it was a tough draw because we have clubs like Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers in our group. But they are the games that we want to play in. We are up against some really big names, but that is what it is all about. “We’re confident that we’ll do very well. You only have to look at Mervue United to see that it is possible to move from the A Championship into the First Division and to do well once you make that jump. We’re not in the A Championship to make-up numbers, we want to win promotion as soon as we can.” O’Rahilly says that the move into the Newstalk A Championship has given football in Kerry a massive boost, something that is evident by the interest now being taken in the club: “There is a great buzz around the town now that we’re in the League of Ireland. Even people from other clubs, who you would normally be rivals with, are wishing us well and coming along to our games to support us. We’re getting great coverage in the local press and people are talking about us. People who would never have had any interest in soccer are coming up to us in the street and asking us about how we’re getting on. “A lot of young lads are coming to our games. They now have something to aim for. They know that they have a chance of playing League of Ireland football in Kerry. Previously, if they wanted to play League of Ireland they would have had to go to Cork or Dublin or Waterford.” FAI Ford Cup First Round Saturday, April 25th Tullamore Town v Carrigaline United Leah Victoria Park 4.00pm Castlebar Celtic v Ringmahon Rangers Celtic Park 7.30pm Sunday, April 26th Glenmore Dundrum v St. Mary’s, Cork St. Tiernan’s, Dundrum 2.00pm St. Peter’s, Athlone v Bluebell United McCarthy Park 2.00pm Rockmount v Malahide United Rockmount Park 2.30pm Tralee Dynamos v Clonmel Town Cahermoneen 2.30pm |
