Newstalk
A Championship to kick-off this weekend
The Newstalk A Championship kicks-off this weekend, with 18 clubs taking
part in this season’s competition which will run from May 22nd
until October.
The Newstalk A Championship is the third tier of the Airtricity League and
combines the reserve teams of established Airtricity League clubs alongside
clubs from outside the top two divisions of Irish football.
Alongside the ten Airtricity League Premier Division clubs, the 2010
Newstalk A Championship will also contain Shelbourne, Limerick and Finn Harps
from the Airtricity League First Division, as well as Cobh Ramblers, Castlebar
Celtic,
Tullamore
Town
,
FC Carlow
and Tralee Dynamos.
The 2009 Newstalk A Championship was claimed by Shamrock Rovers, after the
Hoops defeated Salthill Devon in the competition final.
Fran Gavin
, Director of the Airtricity League, said: “The Newstalk A Championship has
added a vital tier to Irish football. The division acts as a stepping stone for
players and clubs to compete in the Premier and First Divisions of the
Airtricity League. The Newstalk A Championship has helped usher a lot of new
young players into the league and clubs are seeing the benefit of that. I would
like to thank Newstalk for their continued sponsorship of the division and wish
every club the best of luck for the 2010 season.”
Newstalk
Sport
s Editor Ger Gilroy said: “Newstalk is delighted to be associated with the
rising stars of the Irish game. The Newstalk A Championship has proven to be a
brilliant addition to the league and is vital for the continued vibrancy of the
game here.”
