Tralee Dynamos 3 Cobh Ramblers 1

Padraig Harnett - Tralee Dynamos Media Officer

Minute of Magic rumbled ramblers:

This was a game that Dynamos had to win and did so, although maybe not as easily as they could have. Ramblers are a young side but certainly made it difficult for Dynamos and kept going until the final whistle. They have a number of very good young players which is good to see for the future of the former Premier team.

Back to Dynamos and they were forced to start without the injured James Sugure and Jonathan Burrows while Eoin Cassidy was on the bench having just returned following an ankle injury.

From the outset Dynamos were on the attack and created a number of good chances with Wayne Conway and Peter K McCarthy both looking very dangerous. This was coupled with Stevie O’Mahoney dangerous crosses and it looked only a matter of time before the home side opened the scoring.

Indeed Kevin McCarthy in the Cobh goal is a keeper to watch out for as he pulled off two great saves, in the 15th minute from a Wayne Conway shot after he was set up by David Hayes and Peter McCarthy and again in the 19th minute when an O’Mahoney cross was headed goal wards by Hayes but McCarthy finger-tipped over.

Dynamos were then hit with a sucker punch in the 24th minute. On one of Ramblers rare attacks Brian Fitzgerald attempted to head the ball back to Robert Birsdall in the Tralee goal but got too much on it and the ball nestled in the net.

Cobh could have grabbed a second straight afterwards when sloppy Dynamos defending let Shane Spillane in but he shot over.

The game then changed totally in the 33rd minute. Firstly Wayne Conway got onto the end of a Peter McCarthy pass and he made no mistake with a great shot from the edge of the box.

Cobh had hardly gotten over this shock when they conceeded a second. This time it was Conway who crossed the ball into the box, the bounce got the better of the keeper and McCarthy was on hand, as all good goal poachers are to nod the ball into an empty net.

Dynamos kept pushing to the half and Jamie McIntyre was unlucky not to add to the lead as they started the second half as they finished the first – on the attack.

Wayne Conway got in a good header from a McCarthy cross which the keeper did well to push away while the impressive defender Gary Collins twice came to Ramblers in a short period with fine blocks on Brian Fitzgerald.

Dynamos needed the third to kill off the game but struggled as little to get it and were nearly hauled back level in the 66th minute when Connie Murphy, who had just come on as a sub, beat two defenders and got in a low shot which Birdsall did well to smother.

Dynamos made changes themselves with Cassidy replacing Peter McCarthy who picked up an ankle injury,Eddie Duggan coming on for Darren Crotty and Theo Diggins on for Maurice O’Rahilly.

However it was the familiar combination an O’Mahony corner a Wayne Conway header that wrapped up the win and gave Dynamos a well deserved three points.

They now have two games left – one home to Bohs and one away to Bray Wanderers before they know if they will be involved in the post season.
