Bohs Brillance beats Dynamos

Tralee Dynamos finished of their inaugural A Championship campaign going down 2-1 to Bohemians. Bohs came to Tralee needing a win to take their challenge for group honours to the final day of the season next Sunday and this win ensures a winner takes all clash with Shamrock Rovers.

The game, attended by one of the biggest crowds of the season had an open feel about it right from the start with both sides playing a wonderful brand of football.

Wayne Conway was the first to threaten with a good run but he was crowded out before he could get his shot away.

Peter McCarthy set up James Sugrue in the 16th minute and he found Conway whose shot was well saved by Paul Hunt in the Bohs goal.

Dynamos were doing well at this stage and threatened twice from corners when Stephen O’Mahony’s deliveries both found the head of Brian Fitzgerald but he couldn’t direct his headers on target.

Bohs now realised they were in a game and up the tempo with two appropriately named soccer players, Mark Hughes and Lee Dixon, turning the screw.

In the 24th minute Dixon went on a mazy run and put in the perfect ball for the in-rushing Hughes who looked destined to score but some how managed to pull his volley wide of the post when it seemed easier just to knock the ball into the net.

Garreth Callaghan was next to try his luck but he was stopped by the combined efforts of Brian Fitzgerald and Maurice O’Rahilly while on the half hour Callaghan, Dixon and Traynor all combined with the latter shooting over when he should have really threatened Birdsall in the Dynamos goal.

Fitzgerald came off injured shortly afterwards and was replaced by David Hayes.

However the three minutes between the 36th and 39th minute the game swung totally in favour of Bohs with the Dublin side scoring twice.

Firstly Traynor and Hughues combined to set up Gary Burke who made no mistake from close range while the same player doubled Bohs lead. This time he was fastest to react when a Shane Keely shot was half blocked and with Dynamos defence looking for off side he shot home.

To be fair Dynamos responded well and were very unlucky in the last minute of the half when Paul Hunt made a brilliant reflex save from Peter McCarthy, following a Stephen O’Mahony corner. The ball broke to McCarthy in the six yards box who swivelled brilliantly but Hunt stuck out a strong hand to push the ball away.

The second half was controlled by Bohs who restricted Dynamos to very few chances while not really creating a lot themselves. Darren Crotty found Jamie McIntyre but he was off balance and shot over.

Maurice O’Rahilly and Stephen O’Mahony tried hard to pull Dynamos back into the game and manager Jason Fitzgerald changed things around bringing on Eoin Cassidy and Eddie Duggan but in reality it was the visitors who looked more likely to score. Birdsall did well to block shots from Keely and Dixon and David Hayes did excellently to stop sub Dan Egan in his tracks when Bohs went on a four against two break.

Dynamos did make it a ‘squeeky bum’ finish for Bohs when in the 93rd minute Maurice O’Rahilly went on a great run and was fouled in the box by Alan Mulcahy.

Eddie Duggan kept his nerve and blasted home an unstoppable penalty high to the keepers left. Bohs subs and management were whistling at referee Kevin O’Regan to blow the final whistle while Dynamos were praying for a little more time. They did force two more half chances with O’Rahilly and Conway both trying to get headers on target but to no avail and after six minutes the referee did call a halt with Bohs taking the three points and Dynamos saluting their fans for all the support during the season, one that still has one game left, away to Bray Wanderers but the home campaign ends with a 2-1 defeat.

Tralee Dynamos would like to thanks the players for outstanding committements from August 2008. This team has the unique distinction of being the first team from Kerry to play senior soccer in the League of Ireland. A fantastic cup run ended away to Premier Division side Bray Wanderers on a scoreline of 2-0. Dynamos had wins over Clonmel, St. Mary's (Cork) & Salthill Devon in the competition. Many thanks to Jason Fitzgearld, Sean O'Sullivan & Joby Costello (Goalkeeper Coach) for all their hard work throughout the season. To all the supporters who came out to support the team we thank you. And for all in Kingdom Boys who's support and contributions on and off the field was a major factor in the success of this of first season of League of Ireland. Finally to the Board of Directors for making this historic season possible.
