TRALEE DYNAMOS 2 TOLKA ROVERS 2
Media officer Padraig Harnett writes;
Dynamos go into the hat with the big boys in the FAI Ford Cup for the second season.
FAI Cup 2nd Round:
Tralee Dynamos will be watching Monday Night Soccer tomorrow night with great interest as, for the second season they will be in the hat with the big boys.
However before they can look that far
ahead there will be the matter of a second round replay to get over following
today’s 2-2 draw with Tolka Rovers in
We can take a number of positives from this game as we made five changes from the side that lost to Waterford United in the EA Sports Cup including the welcoming back of Maurice O’Rahilly, Eoin Cassidy and David Conway.
Also coming into the starting line-up were Adrian Quirke and Jamie McIntyre as our injury crisis seems to be eventually ending.
The game was proceeded by a perfectly observed minutes silence to mark National Famine Commemoration Day.
There is something special about playing in the countries major Cup competition and knowing before kick-off that you were only 90 minutes away from a third round place. If a player does not want to test himself at this level then he must seriously question his ambition.
Dynamos settled well into the game with Kieran McCarthy commanding in the air and McIntyre, Sugrue, Kerins and Cassidy combining well on the deck.
McCarthy and Sugrue combined to set up our first chance but Stephen Murtagh put in a goal saving tackle.
Tolka Rovers had their first chance on 10 minutes when defender Stephen Costello found himself in an advance position and managed to hit the target but Derek O’Shea was equal to the shot.
We then broke quickly and the ball found its way to Theo Diggins on the right wing and he whipped in a pin point cross which was met by a bullet header from Chris Kerins to put us 1-0 in front.
One minute later Dynamos had a chance to double their lead but Cassidy was just beaten to a Sugrue corner by Tolka’s keeper Morgan Cranley.
Disaster struck only two minutes later for Dynamos when Gavin Quinn was set up by Somers and Swan and found himself in acres of space in the box, despite the presence of a number of Dynamos defenders. He coolly slotted the ball low past the despairing dive of O’Shea to level matters at 1-1.
The game was now being played at a furious pace and when O’Rahilly tackled Swan the ball broke over the top for Kerins but he was unable to get his shot past Cranley.
A long kick out from Cranley then fell kindly for Moylan but he was unable to keep his shot down as the game swung from end to end.
Dynamos then created two good opportunities, firstly from a Sugure corner that Tolka’s keeper just managed to punch away and then McCarthy put Kerins in but again Cranley came to his sides rescue.
Tolka replied from a free kick just outside the box which Murtagh his with venom but it went too high.
Then in the 38th minute Adrian Quirke got on the ball in the middle of the park, looked up and spotted Kerins and played the ball over the top for him to chase. Cranley came flying out and took down the Dynamos striker and was lucky to only get a yellow. Kerins picked himself up and slotted the ball home to the keeper’s right, who in fairness to him, did get a hand to it.
Half time and it was advantage Dynamos however the opinion of the decent crowd was that the next goal was going to be vital.
We started the second half very brightly and Adrian Quirke found Kerins whose cross was just too high for McCarthy and then a minute later the same two combined but Tolka were able to clear.
In the 59th minute Rovers should have equalised. Moylan picked out the unmarked Swan in the box but his header from no more than four yards was well saved by O’Shea.
However if only took one more minute for both sides to be level. Somers played the ball over the home side’s defence and Quinn was taken down by O’Shea. Somers took the responsibility and made no mistake to level matters at 2-2.
Dynamos responded with a good attack with culminated with Sugrue shooting over while at the other end O’Rahilly made an important tackle under pressure while Swan really should have put his ahead but missed the target from six yards.
Both sides were really looking for the winner now and McIntyre set up Kerins but the keeper save well while Tolka forced two quick corners, the second falling to Murtagh who shot over.
Dynamsos then had two late late chances to win the game. Firstly O’Rahilly who had gone forward for a corner swivelled well to get a touch on a ball in from Sugrue and was very unlucky to see his effort hit the crossbar while Kerins went on a mazy dribble along the end-line and got his shot in but Cranley save well at his near post and so it off to Dublin next Sunday and by then we will know the carrot of who we play in the third round.
