Dynamos Delight as Bohs get the Blues:
When the A Championship fixture list was
announced the trip to
Dynamos were coming off the loss against Bray Wanderers last week so it looked like being a tough task to get something from the game. However not alone did Dynamos get something they took all three points following an excellent performance. Not even the harsh sending off of James Sugrue could take the gloss off the result.
Dynamos started with Chris Kerins up front on his own and had their first shot on target in the eight minute when Eddie Duggan set up Chris Kerins whose on target shot was saved by Paul Hunt. David O’Leary was next to test the keeper who this time spilled the shot but there was no Dynamos player close enough to take advantage.
In the 13th minute Dynamos forced a corner but Brian Fitzgerald couldn’t keep his header down. They were putting together some very good passing movements with Burrows, David O’Leary and Chris Kerins all involved in the next attack. However in the fifteenth minute Bohs showed how dangerous they could be and it took a goal saving tackle from Maurice O’Rahilly on Lee Dixon to keep the score at 0-0. The same player came to Dynamos rescue again eight minutes later with another big tackle after Brian Fitzgerald slipped.
A good move saw Eddie Duggan and Chris Kerins exchange passes with Duggan shooting just wide and the same players played another 1-2 with Chris Kerins this time going close.
In the 27th minute Bohs won a
free kick but the wall did its job and blocked
Bohemians had their first shot in a long period on the 42nd minute and had a corner in the 43rd but once again the Dynamos rear guard stood firm and so the first half came to an end.
Dynamos started the second half in the same vein as the first with David O’Leary, Chris Kerins and Eddie Duggan threatening. Wayne Guthrie was called into action for the first time in the fifth minute to save a John Hanney header.
In the 12th minute it looked odds on that Dynamos would get a second. Eddie Duggan set up Chris Kerins and his pass saw James Sugrue hit a cracking shot. However Paul Hunt was equal to it diving to his left to push the ball away. Hunt was again called into action two minutes later when he made another great save diving high to his left to push away a Chris Kerins header.
Dynamos kept up the pressure and forced two corners with Brian Fitzgerald getting on the end of one but he couldn’t direct his header on target. Following the second the ball fell to Eddie Duggan whose pass to Chris Kerins was then flicked on to James Sugrue whose shot was just wide.
Dynamos suffered a cruel blow in the 36th minute when James Sugrue was harshly red-carded following a tackle. At this stage of the game things were very competitive and with the rain again falling the pitch was very slippery. To be fair to Sugrue there was no maliciousness in the tackle but the ref reckoned his studs were showing and so the red card.
Dynamos, to their credit didn’t flinch and made two changes – Eoin Cassidy for David O’Leary and Darren Crotty for Adrian Quirke and the fresh legs helped keep Dynamos going forward. The finished the stronger with Eoin Csssidy’s strength and ability to hold up the ball a big factor. Try as Bohs did they were never let create anything and were restricted to long range efforts while without their excellent keeper Dynamos would have added a second or third but didn’t need to as 1-0 was enough for the historic victory.
Sugrue’s sending off will be a blow for next week’s big FAI Cup game and the Dynamos brain-trust will have to find some way of replacing him but for this week its celebration time.
